Chargeable weight vs volumetric weight
Chargeable weight is the comparison value used for many freight services: the greater of actual packed mass and a volume-derived weight. It is a planning input, not the final billed line on a contract. A carrier may round dimensions, rate by piece, set minimums or use a different divisor.
Start with packed measurements
Measure the outside of the packed handling unit in centimetres. Include the full gross mass of the goods, carton, pallet and protective packaging where applicable. Multiply length × width × height to obtain cubic centimetres; divide by 1,000,000 for cubic metres (CBM).
For a 120 × 80 × 50 cm unit, volume is 480,000 cm³ or 0.48 CBM. At a 6,000 cm³/kg air-freight example divisor, dimensional weight is 80 kg. If actual packed weight is 50 kg, the comparison picks 80 kg. If actual mass is 100 kg instead, actual mass wins.
The divisor changes the answer
DHL Global Forwarding Australia illustrates 1:6 for air freight, 1:1 for ocean LCL, and an inland example at 1:3. FedEx Australia uses 5,000 cm³/kg in its express dimensional-weight explanation and states that measurements are rounded upward. These are examples from different service contexts, not one universal industry tariff.
Ocean LCL commonly uses weight/measure; a full container is priced by container rather than this LCL comparison. Road is a collection or delivery leg in this corridor, not an all-road option from China to Australia. Your carrier's written quote determines the actual divisor, measurement and rounding method.
Use the result in a quote request
Provide packed dimensions and gross weight for each piece, the count of pieces, pickup and delivery points, commodity and time requirement. Ask whether pricing is per shipment, per piece, per CBM, per tonne, per container or by chargeable kilogram. Confirm minimums, surcharges and any remeasurement policy.
A per-CBM figure entered in our calculator produces only comparable arithmetic bases. It cannot estimate a weight-rated air or courier invoice, nor does it include customs, terminal, biosecurity or inland delivery costs.
